A poignant and gently humorous journey through the rugged landscapes of Donegal, The Three Urns arrives in cinemas across Ireland on April 17, offering audiences a moving exploration of grief, reconnection, and the meaning of home.

The film follows Mr. O’Connor (Ciarán Hinds), who returns to Donegal after decades living in France to fulfil his late wife’s final wish: to have her ashes scattered in her homeland. What begins as a quiet, reflective homecoming soon transforms into an unpredictable road trip, filled with mishaps, detours, and unexpected encounters that challenge and ultimately reshape his understanding of loss and belonging.
Featuring a distinguished ensemble cast including Stephen Dillane, Olga Kurylenko, Lisa Dwan, Hélène Patarot, Sinéad Cusack, and Stephen Fry, The Three Urns brings together an exceptional range of talent to tell a deeply human story.

The project marks Samson Films’ first collaboration with writer-directors Stephen Warbeck and John-Paul Davidson, working alongside emerging producer Eamon Hughes. Reflecting on the production, Hughes said: “I was extremely delighted to be given the trust of these wonderful directors to bring this film to the big screen.”
A strong emphasis was placed on local involvement during production, with Samson Films committed to hiring as many Donegal-based cast and crew as possible. This effort was supported by Eileen Rafferty and Aideen Doherty of the Donegal Film Office, who connected the production with a wealth of local talent. In appreciation, the filmmakers hosted a special screening for the Donegal community.
The Three Urns premiered at the Dublin International Film Festival last month, with further screenings at the Sofia International Film Festival, and is set to make its North American debut at the Dallas International Film Festival later this month.
Blending warmth, wit, and emotional depth, The Three Urns is a distinctly Irish story that resonates far beyond its setting. The film opens in selected cinemas nationwide on April 17.
